Home & Garden, Tips & How To

Welcome Fall!

It has started to feel like Fall here in Michigan.  Yesterday was cool, overcast and breezy.  We have three huge trees in our front yard that start dropping their leaves in August and our yard is covered.

A few of the them blew in our front door as I was taking pictures and I almost left them there for effect. Then I thought you would think my house was dirty! ;)
All my faux foliage was bright orange, red and yellow when I bought them.  I decided I didn't like them so bright and went to my impressive collection of spray paints.  I used a metallic copper and lightly sprayed until all the colors were softened.

I like how the paint tied them in with my copper rooster and glass pumpkin.
This copper rooster used to be part of a weather vane that was on the roof of our cabana.  He broke off after several years but I hang on to him.

This is the view out of our guest room looking at the garden in front of the family room.

So Happy Fall, Y'all!  It is such a beautiful time of the year!

Love and Chicken Wire

Remember when I found this wonderful china cabinet for a mere $100 and then painted it?  I wanted to put chicken wire in the doors and my husband preferred the glass.

Well, I just dropped it but did not put the glass doors back in.  I don't know if you've noticed, but there's been nothing in the doors.

This morning I asked him if we had any chicken wire.  He said we didn't.  I asked how much chicken wire cost.  He looked on his phone and told me $10 for more than I would ever need.  We both looked at the china cabinet.

He didn't have any classes to teach today so in a while he got dressed and left...a little later than usual.  I was puttering around the kitchen when he came walking back in with a new roll of chicken wire.  lol

He said, "Is this what you want?"  I laughed and said, "Yes!"  And he went off to work!

I added the chicken wire to my cabinet with a staple gun.

I love it!  I love him.
Happy Thursday!

Reupholstering a Round Ottoman – With Almost No Sewing!

Yesterday I posted all the changes I had made in our living room.  The kick-off was finding a beautiful blue plaid faux silk and deciding to reupholster our round ottoman.

I bought this ottoman several years ago at a second hand store. Recently I had it slip covered with a simple cover that I made from drop cloth fabric.  But I knew that was temporary.

I did this project without much sewing at all!   You could do this by sewing only 3 short seams and using fabric glue or iron on adhesive for your hem.

I only had to order two yards of this fabric as it was 110" wide!  That's twice the normal width so half the normal fabric order.  I got this fabric at warehousefabricinc.com for only $19.99 a yard.  (not a sponsored post)  You will probably need about 4 yards of 54" fabric.  This will give you some left over fabric to make a couple of matching pillows, which I always like to have.

You will need:
4 yards of 54" fabric
ball fringe
matching thread
a measuring tape
scissors
straight pins
fabric glue
iron on adhesive (if you don't want to sew your hem)
staple gun and staples

I first cut a piece to cover the top of the ottoman.
I then stapled my fabric onto my ottoman.  Using a staple gun, I first stapled opposite sides, then opposite sides again, so that I had staple the four corners of the ottoman.  I then gently worked the gathers into the fabric and stapled all around as I went.  Then I trimmed off the excess fabric.

I measured from the staple line to the floor to get my length for the skirt, about 11" and then added enough for hem.  I then measured the circumference of the ottoman and cut 3 lengths of fabric 13" wide, about two and a half the length of the circumference of the ottoman.   I sewed the ends together so I that I had a continuous length, that made a circle and was 13" wide.

I put a hem in one side so that my skirt would have a finished hem.  You can use iron on adhesive for this step.  I do that often when I'm making slip covers or doing reupholstery because your seam is invisible.  Because I had such a busy pattern, I hid my seam easily.

I stapled the fabric to the ottoman in one spot.

Then I went to the opposite side of the ottoman.  pulled the skirt fabric until I found the exact middle and stapled that middle spot to the exact opposite on the ottoman of the first staple.  I now had my fabric evenly spaced around the ottoman.

I went to the 1/4 spot and found the middle and stapled.  I went to the opposite side, found the middle and stapled.

I repeated that process until it looked like this.
I then took a section of fabric and folded it like this and stapled it down.
I repeated this process all around the ottoman.  Because each section was the same size, it was easy to make my pleats even.
I went all around the ottoman again, stapling continually, making sure everything was attached securely.

I used the staple gun to attach my fringe.  When I turned the gun so that staples went on vertically they disappeared into the pattern of the fringe.  You may want to use fabric glue for this step if your staples are showing.  I used fabric glue at the end of my fringe, turning it under so it won't fray, and stapling it down.

It only took me about 3 hours to finish the whole job.  My daughter, who doesn't sew, read my tutorial and said, "I think even I could do that!"

I've always liked this ottoman when it's upholstered because I think it looks like a giant pin cushion! lol

Have a great day!

Lots of Changes in the Living Room

I love fabric and will typically use a fabric as my starting off point for decorating any room. And I did that this time again - only my fabric was just a solid drop cloth.

I'd been feeling like our living room had gotten a little neutral for my liking and when I spotted this faux silk blue plaid at warehousefabricsinc.com, I thought it was perfect!  When the fabric arrived it even matched my robin's egg blue linen perfectly!

I knew that I wasn't satisfied with the slipcover I had made for the round ottoman in this room and thought this faux silk plaid would be perfect to reupholster it with and add some pattern.
I also ordered a beautiful fringe that had all the colors in it to match.
This new plaid also has all the same shades that's in the toile in this room!
With a little bit of furniture rearranging, I feel like I have a whole new room!
I replaced my floral door picture with some French Country cows for Fall.  They've been living in the basement for a while and were ready to come back out.  I didn't like my Blue and White with this new fabric so I gave my secretary a library feel, which I also like for Fall.
I made an overstuffed pillow for the couch out of the same fabric and added the matching fringe.
I put a mix of glass pumpkins and a beautiful teal glass vase filled with dried hydrangeas on a rustic basket tray.
I've also moved another end table into the room and the mercury glass lamps that were in the family room. I'll probably paint the base of this table the same color as I've painted the others.  I just want to make sure that these changes are gonna stick! ;)
I reupholstered this ottoman with very little sewing.  I'll post later this week how I did it and how you can get perfectly spaced pleats without doing any math! :)

Hope your Summer had a great ending!

Fall Mantel

It's a dark, rainy day here in Michigan.  But inside I'm brightening it up with some Fall color.

We have two fireplaces in our living room~dining room~family room area so I'm always wanting to come up with new ideas to decorate them both.  I want them to coordinate but not be the same.

I've used this basket on our front door before and had planned on using it again this Fall but suddenly got the idea that I'd enjoy it much more above our mantel in the family room.

I filled it first with eucalyptus.  It smells wonderful and I was surprised that I could smell it clear across the room!  I then added some faux fall leaves, some burlap hydrangeas and burlap sunflowers.
The ceilings are high in this room so I love having something a little over-sized here.
I added the wood and metal wall art, that used to be on my kitchen wall, behind the basket, and a few of my candle sticks and a basket pumpkin.
So sorry for these dark pictures.   The sun is supposed to shine tomorrow!  :)
Have a wonderful, long weekend!

How to Make a Welcome Sign

There's something about early Fall that makes me want to decorate my front entry.  Maybe it's because all the summer flowers are fading.  But maybe it's because there are so many beautiful things you can do this time of year to give your guests a warm welcome!

I made this simple 'Welcome Sign' in no time at all.

We had some fence slats in our garage that we hadn't used and I grabbed one.  It's outdoor treated wood so it's perfect for an outdoor sign!  You can pick one up any home improvement store for about a dollar.
I spray painted it whatever tan color I had available.  I actually used what was left in two different tan cans.

I bought some letters at Walmart that were the perfect size and spray painted them with an antique white.

Then I attached the letters with wood glue.

The next day as I was driving away from my house I noticed that my letters looked too bright so the next morning I gave the letters a once-over with a beige chalk paint.  My daughter noticed the difference right away and laughed that the first paint job lasted one day!

You can tell that it's just being held in place by the urn.  I originally had planned on putting it on the other side of the door but decided it was better here.  I was surprised by how well it matched the house!

I'm looking forward to adding pumpkins and other fall decor in a couple of weeks!

love and blessings~

End of Summer Welcome

It's too early for pumpkins and the leaves are still green on the trees but you can definitely feel Fall in the air here in Michigan.  Our town's population has increased by about 10,000 this weekend as college classes start today.  So Big Rapids is hopping!

I'm hosting a Bible study in my home this Fall and Winter so it's so much fun to decorate knowing that others will enjoy it weekly.  "Others" being women - that is!  Not 6'4" basketball players that don't notice anything except how many cows I have in my kitchen! lol

I was at the market this week and spotted a bucket full of sunflowers.  And what says 'end of Summer' and French Country more than sunflowers, dried Lavender and ripe apples?

There's fresh wood in the basket next to the fireplace. (Our fireplace actually has a gas log that puts out wonderful heat, but one day my daughter said, "Every time I see that basket of wood, I keep thinking the fire is real!"  So that's enough reason for me to keep it there!)

And the throws in the basket next to the couch are freshly washed.  I love when guests pile onto our couch Indian-style,  wrapped in a throw, and we share our lives with each other.

There's a new 'Welcome Sign' and some beautiful multi-colored mums at our front door to greet our guests as they arrive.

Please don't notice that one of my mums is all broken.  It was the victim of a basketball. lol  (I'm going to pretend like I didn't notice. I'll miss him so much when he moves out!)

I made the Welcome sign and will share with you how I did it later this week.  When the leaves turn and the pumpkins are ripe, I'll add them to the mix.

And I love when the first thing my guests say when they enter my house is how good it smells! I always have a scented candle, or two, burning. I match them to the seasons and this time of year it smells like spiced apples, spiced oranges or caramel.  And I don't even have to bake!  ;)

On another topic, one of my other son's friends told me recently how much he liked the rug at the front door!  lol  He said it felt so good on his feet.  You would have been so proud of me!  I just smiled and said, 'Thank you!' and didn't tell him how mad I was at it.  My Dirt Rug

Our Bible study group is going to be reading and discussing two books that I have gained so much from - "There Were Two Trees in the Garden" by Rick Joyner and  "What the Bible Says About Child Training" by Richard Fugate (links to Amazon)  God willing, I'm going to post our topics on my other blog Summits of Rubies.  And I'd love to have you follow along and share if you'd like!

Have a great day!

End of Summer French Blue Shutters

The weather has really been cool here in Michigan the last week.  I think fall is so beautiful, especially here,  but the summers here are short and mild and autumn is followed by a long, cold, snowy winter.  And I honestly get a little sad when I realize summer is ending.  So I cheered myself up with a little paint!

Recently I changed my rug in my living room.  I'm really happy with this rug in here but the jute rug that was here before was medium brown and added a little more contrasting color to this room.  The wool rug is the same color as the furniture and has washed things out a bit.

The thought that 'I can re-paint my shutters' has always been in back of my mind and this seemed like a good time to see if changing them would add a little more color drama to the room.

I painted all the shutters in this area.
I am really liking the contrast now.  The shutters were originally painted SW Interesting Aqua and SW Rain and darkened a little with SW Seal.

The new color I mixed here at home but is more of a French Blue.  I left some of the old, lighter and darker colors showing - giving them a worn look.
My Endless Summer hydrangeas were starting to fade so I filled this copper pot and put them on the dining room table to dry.  I love the beautiful mix of colors!
My Strawberry Shortcake hydrangeas are all still beautiful and slowly turning pink at the bottom of each bloom.
I think the darker color is perfect and gives a new dimension to these rooms.

The shutters in the family room are still the lighter color.  I always want these rooms to coordinate, because they're open to each other, but I like that there's also a difference now.

Have a wonderful weekend!

love and blessings~
